What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that contain small amounts of information and are downloaded to your computer or mobile device when you visit a Web site. Cookies are then sent back to the Web site from which they originate or to another Web site that recognizes the cookie each time you visit. Cookies are useful because they allow Web pages to recognize the devices of individual users (such as passwords, the language selected, font size, other display settings). Cookies allow you to customize a website to your interests so that they do not have to be re-entered each time. Cookies are therefore used to perform computer authentication, monitor visits, and monitor user behavior on a Web site. They may also include a unique identification code that tracks users’ navigation within the website for statistical or advertising purposes. During navigation on the Website, you may also receive cookies from other websites or web servers on your computer or mobile device (see “Third Party Cookies”). Some functionalities may not function properly or at all without cookies, so in certain cases they are technically necessary for the proper functioning of the website.

There are several types of cookies. Depending on their characteristics and functions, they may be stored on your computer or mobile device for different lengths of time: session cookies, which are automatically deleted when the browser is closed; so-called persistent cookies, which remain on the user’s device until a predetermined time.

Under Italian law, the use of cookies does not always require explicit consent. In particular, the so-called “technical” cookies do not require them, for example to transmit a message via an electronic communications network or to provide a service explicitly requested by the user. In other words, they are indispensable cookies for the proper functioning of the site or for activities requested by the user.

Among the technical cookies that do not require the express consent to their use, the Authority for the Protection of Personal Data includes the following cookies (see. Prov.Gen. “Recognition of simplified procedures for information and obtaining consent for the use of cookies – 8 May 2014“):

  • “Analysis Cookies”, directly used by the site operator to collect information about the number and behaviour of users of this site,
  • Cookies for navigation or session cookies (for authentication, making a purchase, etc.),
  • Functional Cookies: These cookies allow users to navigate based on a number of selected functions (such as language settings, the goods selected for purchase) with the purpose of improving the comfort and performance of the website.

Cookies that are used to create user profiles for the creation of advertising messages require the prior consent of the user and are in accordance with his preferences, which can be recognized from the navigation.

What types of cookies do we use?
